Lamech First Polygamist
Lamech Descendant of Cain
In Genesis 4:23 KJV, Lamech called his wives to listen to his great valor – “I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt”. Lamech did not stop there. He added “If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and seven fold” (Genesis 4:24 KJV).
The Bible does not mention who Lamech slew nor the reason why he slew a man.
One belief is that Lamech’s action displayed no fear of God or any man. This could have been the reason why the name Lamech held the meaning “strikedown” or “wild man”.
However, there are other interpretations of this verse. Some say that Lamech accidentally killed a man. Some say that it was a form of self defense – “I have slain a man to my wounding”. This is why Lamech is so confident that God will protect him since Cain was protected by God and Cain intentionally murdered his brother Abel. Surely God would offer even more protection to Lamech if he accidentally killed a man or killed in self-defense.
